I was thinking Marshmallow too, but that crumbleweed stuff has also really taken over most of Canberra's paddocks - terrible weed  Angry...

yeah it's poisonous to horses but they don't tend to eat it. responds well to application of roundup/glyphosate - just wander around and hit individual plants.  selectives don't seem quite so efficient on it.

Yep, selectives are pretty ineffective on this one.  Horses don't tend to eat it, but it can really spread.  Hit it with glyphosate or depending on how much there is, you can dig it out.

Eek! I have that marshmellow weed in my paddock too! It's only popped up in the Jenny Craig paddock, but it's overrun the whole back corner! And where there's no marshmellow weed it's that Crumbweed stuff. Better get out there with the weedkiller this weekend. How poisonous is the marshmellow weed to horses? I saw Dash picking at it the other day before I moved them out of the paddock.

RIRDC's 'plants poisonous to horses' says:
Small fowered mallow has been  implicated as the cause of  poisoning  cases in horses, sheep and cattle.  The incidence is rare as the plants are usually unpalatable.  There are no confirmed reports of  small flowered mallow poisoning of  horses in Australia but it should be considered a risk because it is a common weed of  horse pastures. The toxin in this plant is unknown.  Young animals seem to be most at risk.

it's listed as a yellow horse icon: Mildy dangerous
Plants with a yellow icon are those that only cause mild and transient poisoning in horses.  A yellow icon might also be assigned to those plants that rarely cause poisoning in horses and are not commonly found in horse areas, or to plants that must be ingested in very large quantities before poisoning occurs.
These plants should be controlled where practical and horses should be watched for potential signs of  poisoning if  the plant grows in horse areas.

So I have a large paddock that has bit mixed in with grass... Sound I just go for the round up, and if it kills the grass so be it??
Also should I spray the leaf or thr bottom of the plant?

ahh no - roundup will kill everything, including the grass, which will enable weeds to come back stronger.

A selective spray is what you want if you're going to nuke the whole paddock and not hit individual plants.  Something like mcpa - although if the weeds are already large then mcpa will be less effective due to the way it acts on weeds.  Metsulfuron-Methyl might be better for advanced weeds, but now we're talking ag chemicals and harder to handle/apply.

so walk around with a backpack of roundup and spray just the individual weeds - or call someone to boomspray the lot with an appropriate chemical.

Hi Andrew,

Yes they are about knee high now. Should I just spray the leaf of the weed?

yeah - roundup them, just the leaves of the weed.

if they're starting to flower - lop the flowering part off and take those away from your property.

Update: I thought the best option was to get a expert, as I think I would do the wrong thing & spend $$ doing that... So I have arranged for one of Greg's guys from Capital Weed Control to do spray all my paddocks, drive way & dressage arena for me & have a great rate too! So that is getting done either today or later this week and the horses will be off from grazing on those paddocks for two weeks.

Shocked Only $100?!??!?!?! Wow... Do you reckon they'd come out to Murrumbateman?? I've got about 4 acres of weedy paddocks that need attention.

That sounds like it could be the go HLT, I've got a small side-paddock they could stay in for 2 weeks, it was small enough and the weeds sparce enough that I could knock 'em all out in one go myself. The other paddocks however are much thicker and bigger. I'll give them a call sometime this week, would certainly save me a lot of time! Weeding is my least favourite thing in the world haha wish i could get mates rates too though  Tongue
