hay bale sizes (was: Ricca??)
« on: January 05, 2010, 06:13:08 PM »
Hi,

I was going through one of my old threads about buying hay and you mentioned you bought yours from the chaff man. I need to buy hay now and was going to buy it from him as its a really good price but on his website its says the lucerne is small squares. Just wondering if it means small as in not a round bale or small as in still smaller than a standard bale. Just need to know how many to buy depending on how big they are.

Sorry if this is really stupid quaestion!

Thanks so much :)

Hi Johnnie

I may stand corrected but usually small squares are your standard size bale that you buy from the produce ( ie the ones that fit in a hay bale bag)
large squares are the 400- 500kg  bales, then the round bales

hope that help

Yep, that's right Salnic.

They are the normal/standard bales of lucerne  :)

yeah, roughly speaking...

small bales are rectangular, approx 40 x 45 x 100cm and weigh 25-30kg.

round bales are approx 1.5 wide and 1.2-1.8m in diameter, weighing in at 400-600kg

large bales are rectangular, approx 90cm x 1m x 2.4m and weigh 500-700kg.

weight will depend on how dry the material is and the density the baler was set at - and many modern rotobalers (rounds) or large square balers are adjustable as to physical size of bale.
