Who does great corrective shoeing around here?
« on: December 16, 2007, 06:08:29 PM »
Ok, so I have to put some shoes on her ladyship for a while to correct high heel/low heel syndrome
http://www.thefarrierbox.co.uk/articles/Low%20Heel.pdf for those interested.

So I'm thinking of calling Gary Dowling who I used to use many moons ago before we went barefoot.  Is there anyone else in the local region that folks would suggest for corrective shoeing if he's not available/willing? :-\

IMO Darryl Bossley is the BEST you can get

Don't be afraid to take a huge leap if one is indicated.....You can't cross a chasm in two small jumps

Darryl is excellent - he comes to Braidwood every few weeks so he may well come out your way too Anokino.

My farrier- when we had shoes on - before EI- was not so keen on persuasions, but when asked to follow the plan, he scored a very good comment for his work..  but persuading him to change is never so easy ::)
But I too am struggling with  very different feet- with the TB low heel high heel

Thanks for reminding me Cyrus.  I'd forgotten to report back.

Well I decided to try one more thing in the non shoeing arena before resorting to putting shoes on her because I really have an aversion to shoeing if it can be at all avoided.

Anyway, I thought long and hard about what Di J had said, read all I could find about high/low heel syndrome.  Looked at the musculature involved and went surfing the net.  I ended up with an idea to try which was basically to allow the sole of the hoof to direct the trim, ensure the frog is in full contact with the ground, not trim the frog at all bar loose flappy bits and most importantly - I used a spirit level to measure if her styloid processes were level.  That last bit took a fair bit of work.  I have been trimming her hooves this way since just before Christmas and I have to tell you the results have been amazing!

Di was out on Friday and she was astounded to see the changes.  Firstly, you can SEE the hoof growing strongly from the coronet in a different, more appropriate angle on BOTH feet.  Secondly, ALL the muscular issues that were indicative of the high/low heel syndrome and that had been there for many, many months previously were gone.  Completely gone.

So I'm going to keep up this trimming regime and see what happens.

Oh, and if you have any cause to doubt me - ask Amamba.  She was there when Di said all the issues were gone. ;)

Thats excellent-
I think I have been reading all you describe-
and the rollover toe etc for my appy sounds good-
but he has been shod so long, he just doesnt cope when he loses his shoes and his toes, get a bit longer too

But I would need a person to do the job- not me..
Doing my own feet was always against my own back- ouch..

Im still going to the shoes now- and see.
I guess founder is not helping my horse, and personally if the appy is foundering- fair chance number 2 " little fat guts" has too.

My back is a huge issue too cyrus.  I have solved the problem by purchasing one of Matthew Gorman's hoof stands and teaching my horse to stand quietly with her leg where I put it on the stand while I sit on my tack box and do her feet.  It works very well.

I'm having a bit of trouble solving the standing quietly problem with little Baron but that's just something I'll have to work on.

Anokino, I am very impressed!  I'd hire YOU to address these issues with our mare.  I would have no idea how to go about it.

Thanks PCM. :)

It was just research, research and more research really.  That and biting the bullet and being willing to try things out.

I could certainly show you what I do on my horse if you want.

Re. the back issues.. My farrier is a fairly small lady who trims horses for a living, she has a stand and basically teaches the horses to hold themselves as much as possible and once she trusts them she will kneel on one knee and place the hoof on the knee.. It's fairly impressive to watch her handle them, my naughty wb adores her and likes to try to do cheeky things but he certainly respects her.

I remember when John Gorman trimmed him in Canberra, Monty would try to lift his foot on to the stand for him  :D
