Sand for dressage arenas
« on: October 29, 2015, 03:51:13 PM »
Hi,

I'm trying to figure out what a suitable sand for our dressage arena will be. Has anyone used the Horse Arena sand from Tharwa Sands? Washed river sand from Teggra? Anyone got nay idea if they are similar to each other or if one is likely to have a more stable surface than the other?

Grateful for all advice. We have a relaly good base, but have been having problems with our sand being super shifty when it's dry - the horses footprints are massive and it's like riding in a bog, even though it's only 60mm deep.

Thank you.

60mm is about right - you wouldn't want it deeper.

Washed river sand is too coarse and gets too deep. I prefer a mix of crusher dust and sand. The CD firms the surface which helps take the pressure off the tendons.

If you've already got sand could you maybe just add some rubber or something into the mix to make it more stable?
