team penning clinics???
« on: November 03, 2013, 05:08:03 PM »
the little fellow ive just broken in has a real nack of working the cattle on my property .. riderless he'll get on a beasts shoulder and push then along through the paddock till hes gotten them through the gate ways.. so at hubbys suggestion Im wondering if there is anywhere around nowra that runs clinics ???

bearing in mind Ive not done team penning before .. Id like to take malaki along to one of these as he seems to ahve a real nack for it .. I think he'll make an awesome kids team penning or campdrafting pony.. a clinic would be a great way to put the wheels in motion ..

They're few and far between, advice given to me was "enter a comp, rock up and have fun"

Most ASH branches run clinics like this - can be expensive for day membership if you're not an ASH member though.

There's a team penning comp at Bungendore on 17th November, if you dont have a team enter as a single and they'll team you up with others.
As Andrew said, its a matter of getting out and practicing at comps

thanks guys.. jindabyne is just a tad far... team penning/campdrafting isnt something im really interested in dressage is my thing but his boy has a nack for the cows and thought it would be a good way to get him out to one to see how he goes as well as use it as an advertising venue for him.. as he will be for sale shortly

If you want to bring the best out of him and your forte is dressage - why don't you try and get a campdrafting family or team penning family to trial him / put him to work on some cattle.  Even if they don't compete him - but just get him working with a rider on their own property with their own cattle.

No offence intended - but if you intend on selling this pony with cattle skills / ability, then trying him out with a rider that does not have cattle sense / cattle skills may not be beneficial to the pony (the old green horse green rider combination).  If you are on FB try searching for the following groups to ask for help with a rider if you like (and there are Nowra people on these sites that I know of):
  • NSW Team Yarders
  • Southern Campdrafting
  • Yass Team Yarder & Sorting
  • NSW Team Sorting

You should be able to find a talented child (there are quite a few out there) or small adult that would suit your needs.
