Medieval mounted games
« on: June 11, 2010, 09:41:51 AM »
The Goulburn Medievalists are playing with mounted games at the moment.  It's early days for us, but we're doing javelins and horse archery amongst other things.

Here's a link to a recent training day, people and horses in costume:

http://cockatricefarm.com.au/2010/05/27/medieval-riding-day/

The link for the club itself is: http://okewaite.wordpress.com.

We're interested in having others in the region join us for activities.

Cheers,

Rhys

WS I think that would be right up your ally! Your so much more gutsy then me, I'd love to go and watch but I reckon participation on my part would end poorly hahaha
You remind me of the babe. What babe? The babe with the power. What power? The power of the voodoo. Who do? You do. Do what? Remind me of the babe.

Seriously liking the sound of this - I have a huge interest in this period of history and especially what part horses played in it.

Sorry, haven't been on this forum for months.

We have a medieval event at Goulburn this weekend (18-19 Sept 2010) which will include some medieval equestrian activities.  More info available at http://okewaite.wordpress.com.

Our plan is for our big medieval mounted games weekend to be in May each year, with this smaller event in the second half of the year.

Cheers,

Rhys

Hi Voloclydes!

We're a host for Willing Workers on Organic Farms (WWOOF), where young people stay at our farm and do five hours work a day in exchange for food, accommodation and Aussie culture.

So our Europe trip was a series of visits to past wwoofers, which is a great way to see other countries.  They gave us the best of their local foods, sometimes took us to their favourite restaurants, and generally we had a great time.  We saw flamingos in the wild Camargue area of France, and the cool Camargue horses.  In the pyrenees mountains, we saw vultures, also herds of chunky cows with big cowbells, and herds of chunky horses with cowbells too.  I suspect both were for the butcher.

So we had a really cool time.

Back here, my hitherto lovely standardbred horse has decided he doesn't want to come back into work after winter.  Hmmm.  And i managed to slip off him while mounting (milk crate collapse, significant indignity involved...) so i've invested in one of those you-beaut conical ones.

Having some issues with my clydie colt too; nothing insurmountable but if you're around Goulburn anytime maybe we could catch up.

*** There's an article and photos on our Ilkla Moor medieval event at www.cockatricefarm.com.au ***

Cheers,

Rhys

would love to catch up, but(aint there one) we just had been to sydney fri night/ saturday...

so hadn't seen your post... we have big things happening.... got a new horsey (well stallion) coming to live with us.... but cannot find time to go collect him from wagga. just very busy also expecting another bub this year within 4 weeks.

just also bought some leather bits and bobs from birdsalls to make some bits. as i am sick of getting ripped off with second hand crap!

your os jaunt sounds awesome and i am so green! i think we need  a green with envy giff..
there are so much historical carriage stuff over there its crazy. they have great respect for heritage and preservation of all things handed down. i am sure your right about the fat horseys!

as for the milk crate experience.... i also have a recent t shirt for that experience except  mine was not a crate but a stump of wood... horse wasn't a stb but an ayrab breaker and i tipped very clutzily into the hitching rail so a few bruises as well as some wounded pride!

oh well all part of the experience!

Quick update on medieval mounted games.  We haven't been doing a lot, between all the wet weather this year, and some family health issues for our Mistress of Horse.

However, we're having an equestrian-theme medieval feast at our farm on 21 May -- to which people on this list would be welcome.  Details at http://okewaite.wordpress.com.  Our farm is at the junction of the Federal and Hume highways, ie about 10 minutes before you get to Goulburn, coming from Canberra.

BTW, the Canberra SCA also does medieval mounted games now, and they have a monthly equestrian training just off the Federal Highway.  You can track them down through http://lochac.sca.org/politarchopolis.
